Homemade Toothpaste With Coconut Oil

**Homemade Coconut Oil Toothpaste**
by Crunchy Betty

3 Tbsp coconut oil
3 Tbsp baking soda
25 drops peppermint essential oil
1 packet stevia
2 tsp vegetable glycerin (optional)

Put the coconut oil and baking soda in a bowl and mash up with a fork until blended. Add the peppermint essential oil, stevia and optional vegetable glycerin and continue to mash and stir until you’ve reached toothpaste consistency.

This recipe surprised me! It was minty fresh   AND it left my teeth feeling clean and slick.

*****I personally made a batch with only baking soda and coconut oil and was quite happy. I  found it creamy but abrasive enough to get my teeth feel squeaky clean. I have used the original Listerine for ever and rinsing with that overrides any other taste so didn`t miss the extra ingredients. I always have baking soda and coconut oil in the house  – but not always the other ingredients.

Play with the recipe if you want to  – maybe you want cinnamon, lemon – or some other flavor. Personally  – I think I am going to try the coconut oil,  baking soda and very  finely grated lemon zest next time. Lemon is such a clean smell and taste and awakens my senses so I think that combo has some potential. Use your imagination.

Kids seem to like color and funky flavors so I was thinking a drop of red food coloring and a bit of ground cinnamon might look and taste similar to the cinnamon hearts that are around at valentines day. Cloves are good for the mouth, so maybe finding a way to incorporate them into a recipe could also be interesting.  There is no limit

I put my toothpaste in a small half-size zip lock, squeezed out all the air,  snipped off a bit at the corner and just have it standing in a small shot glass in the medicine cabinet.  It works like a darn –  it squeezes out just like real toothpaste on to my brush and I can just discard the baggie when empty.  (If your bathroom is a bit cool, just hold it in your warm hands for a few seconds, your body heat will quickly liquefy the oil a bit so the tooth paste flows smoothly.

Enjoy! Here`s to better oral health simply, easily and very afforably.
