Study: Sugar now linked to Dementia
Yes, eating too much sugar widens your backside.
But that’s just the beginning.
The health dangers of sugar continue to grow, and now there’s even evidence that flooding your bloodstream with sugar on a regular basis can also cause memory impairment and decline!


According to German author and neurologist Dr. Agnes Floel, elevated blood sugar levels (from regularly eating high-carb, high-sugar foods) are fast becoming significant markers for cognitive decline and dementia.
In a recent study of 141 participants performed at Charite University Medicine in Berlin, researchers measured and compared sugar levels in 2 test groups—one had normal sugar levels and the others’ were elevated.
After testing which included an MRI scan and a word test, the researchers noted that the higher blood sugar participants consistently did worse during the memory assessments than the normal blood sugar group! 
The reason why this happens is because sugar clogs the nutrient channels in all of your cells.  Not only can this weaken your bones and muscles, but it can slow down communication between your nerve cells–which can lead to mood swings, memory problems and eventually dementia.

More ways this “Sweet Poison” destroys your health:
It encourages insulin resistance
Sugar binds to the hormone receptors in your cells, jamming them up making them insensitive to the hormone insulin.
Once you’re insulin resistant, you have opened the door for Type 2 diabetes, more weight gain and even sexual dysfunction!
It ages you
Sugar stiffens the collagen in your tendons, joints and skin, which can lead to arthritis and premature wrinkling.
At the same time it interferes with the production of NEW collagen throughout your entire body, so you get a double whammy here.
It impairs your immune system functioning
Sugar alters the “sensors” that your white blood cells need in order to be able to distinguish normal, healthy tissues and cells from dangerous invaders.
This opens up the door for infections and viruses of all kinds to flourish as well as the development of cancer.
In addition, sugar also weakens your immune system by “slowing down” your white blood cells too.
White blood cells travel through your blood vessels “patrolling” and waiting for an SOS from a tissue that’s injured or inflamed.
Once they sense that their protective services are needed to help you heal and prevent infection, they wiggle out of your blood stream through little spaces between your cells (called the “matrix”) and go to the troubled area to begin their work.
But sugar can react with proteins in your body and “close off” these tiny crawl spaces, thereby preventing your white blood cells from getting where they need to go to protect you. The more of these “sugar blockages” you have, the more your immune function is impaired.

It interferes with your circulation
Your circulation and your red blood cells are affected by sugar too.
Your red blood cells sop up sugar like a sponge in your bloodstream and in doing so, they grow old, stiff and bloated. 
Now, normally your spleen can filter out these worn-out red blood cells by passing them through a series of corridors—and any that are too “puffed up with sugar” get removed from circulation.
But when your blood is consistently overloaded with sugar, your spleen can’t keep up with its fast-growing filtering job.  Eventually, the puffy red blood cells can build up and clog your capillaries.
This is what’s happening when diabetics go blind and develop numbness in their feet and gangrenous infections.
It can cause dysbiosis
Sugar also harms the important little inhabitants in your gut, and this is another sugar double whammy.
About 70% of your immune system resides in the beneficial bacteria (AKA friendly flora) in your gut.
Also residing in your gut are “bad guys”–harmful bacteria and yeasts–that you can get from your food and the environment.
In order to have a strong flora balance (and hence an effective immune system), many experts recommend that you strive to have at least 85% friendly bacteria in your gut and no more than 15% harmful.
Your friendly flora is nourished by things like vegetables, fermented foods, whole grains and legumes.
The harmful bacteria, on the other hand, LOVE sugar.
So when you give your body a regular onslaught of sugar not only are you starving your beneficial bacteria, but you’re feeding the dangerous ones.
This can cause dysbiosis (harmful bacteria overgrowth), which can not only make your immune system practically non-existent, but it also can hamper your digestion causing gas, bloating and anything-but-normal BMs.
What to do
If you suspect you are suffering the health effects of too much sugar, in addition to seeing your doctor to rule out Type 2 diabetes (among other things), it’s absolutely VITAL to change your diet to replace most of the refined sugar with healthy, complex carbs.

Having a more healthy diet can certainly help reverse your flora balance into the more healthy range, but for many people it’s not enough. This is especially true if you take medications of any kind (particularly antibiotics or acid reducers), are under a fair amount of stress, drink tap water or are exposed to pollutants in the environment or on your job.  All of these factors can also upset your flora balance.
A quality probiotic supplement can be very helpful for most people. there may be some initial discomfort but persrvere through it and experience substantial health improvements.

Unless you suffer from a thyroid condition, it is easy to ignore the function of the thyroid gland. Although small, this endocrine gland – situated just below your neck – plays a big role in regulating metabolic processes in your body. With a dysfunctional thyroid, the functioning of almost all your organs is likewise disrupted. Thyroid disorders generally fall under 3 categories: an overactive thyroid or hyperthyroidism, an under-active thyroid or hypothyroidism and an enlarged thyroid characterized by the presence of nodules.

Unfortunately, thyroid conditions are usually misdiagnosed as most of their symptoms (such as weight gain or loss, chronic fatigue, depression, skin and hair dryness, constipation or diarrhea and menstrual irregularities) can be quite similar to those of other disorders. Echinacea

Licorice

This herb is important in maintaining a balance among glands so that thyroid patients who often suffer from fatigue have improved energy. Moreover in 2011, the Institute of Biosciences and Technology in Texas isolated synthetically derived constituents of triterpenoid glycyrrhetinic acid, a major component of licorice and found it to inhibit the growth of highly invasive thyroid cancer cells. Bugle

In a 2013 study involving 403 patients with mild hyperthyroidism which assessed the effects and safety of an extract of bugle in tablet or drops form, scientists observed statistically and clinically significant improvements in the symptoms of those given the tablet. Because of bugleweed’s effectiveness in alleviating mild hyperthyroidism, some experts believe it can gradually replace regular taking of maintenance medications like methimazole or PTU.

Ashwaganda

This is an herb with antioxidant properties that directly works on the thyroid by producing just the right amount of hormones. Aside from hormonal balance, ashwaganda is known to help the body fight stress by improving the immune system and has been found to have anti-inflammatory effects.

Bacopa

Researchers confirm the potency of bacopa as a thyroid stimulating drug to fight hypothyroidism. It has been found to regulate thyroid hormone concentrations by as much as 41% without adverse reactions.

Eleuthero

Popular as Siberian ginseng, eleuthero is considered a wonder herb for people suffering from hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. Siberian ginseng is believed to be effective in treating hypothyroidism by regulating the levels of hormones in the body. Furthermore, this potent herb contains substances that assist in the normal functioning of the thymus and adrenal glands.

Bladderwrack

Aside from hypothyroidism, bladderwrack is considered as an essential herb for many health conditions. This algae or seaweed contains high levels of natural iodine which is known to stimulate the thyroid gland. Bladderwrack contains substances that help in restoring the normal functioning of the thyroid gland as well as in reducing the size of thyroid goiters. Research shows that this herb is useful in normalizing the activities of overactive thyroid glands. A friend Nina, was plagued by thyroid problems. They were unable to stabilize her thyroid function with medication so she kept swinging between hyper and hypo – hypothyroidism. She literally felt like she was losing her mind for over 5 years. A long time friend and physiotherapist sent her an oxygen spa from Hong Kong and  told her to use it twice per day. The lymphatic system is the garbage collection system of the body.

The majority of the fluid that is carried by the lymphatic system consists of waste deposits from the cells. Each of us has the same amount of lymph as blood in our body. The only thing difference in the lymphatic system compared to the circulatory system is that it does not have a pump.

Lymph fluid is pumped through the vessels via the contraction of our muscles, our body’s own electro-magnetic field and even breathing. This is one of the many benefits of exercise because it moves lymph. A sluggish or clogged lymphatic system doesn’t allow the body to circulate the fluids and eliminate toxic waste buildup which can decrease the body’s immune function. As a result, there is an increase in swelling, inflammation and pain along with the possibility of contracting other diseases. Think of lymph nodes as small filters that can corner bacteria and prevent other nasty ‘surprises’ from invading your body. If they fail, those nodes may become infected with secondary tumors.

The Importance of the Lymphatic System

This is why our lymph system is CRITICAL when it comes to purging our body of waste material! It’s also responsible for distributing nutrients to each and every part of our body. How does the lymph system work? As stated, it doesn’t have a pump like the circulatory system’s heart so the lymph system “PUMPS” the lymph through the body when you EXERCISE!
Do you know what all of this means? It means you need to be active and exercise if you want to heal! This is why couch potatoes tend to develop chronic conditions earlier than those who exercise regularly and STICK to a healthy diet!

The lymph (which is basically recycled blood plasma) needs balanced chemistry within its structure to function properly in that system. This is why it needs to be healthy or full of the nutrients to stay fit, which is what a proper pH level can give it.

In order to maintain adequate pH levels, you need to have appropriate amounts of minerals such as calcium, magnesium and trace elements in your soft tissues. This is what gives the lymphatic system its fluidity. In other words, balanced lymph chemistry is essential for lymph to transport the minerals needed in the cells in order to re-alkalinize or balance the chemicals in the soft tissue. This in turn allows minerals to remain in the cell solution long enough to reach the cells.

To make this scenario possible, appropriate amounts of HCL need to be supplied by the body so that you can absorb the vital minerals needed to help your lymphatic system. In other words, you need adequate amounts of stomach acid (HCL) to digest your food.

Lymph is more than just waste, it is an amalgamation of enzymes, nutrients, sugars, cytokines and a other vital chemicals that coat the cells. As my good friend, Dr. Kevin Conners, likes to say, lymph is like “a healthy river, needing a constant flow of fresh nourishments, which prevents our body from turning it into a stagnant pond.”

Lymph is normally pumped throughout the whole body in lymph vessels as the muscles in your body contract and relax. These vessels also contain check valves that permit the passage of waste in one direction only. If your lymphatic system slows down, it will prevent the circulation of necessary nutrients, thus dulling the response of the immune system at the same time!

Do you know what that means? It means you will be highly susceptible to hidden infections that a strong immune system typically nips in the bud.

As you grow old, the amount of HCL that your body produces decreases. This decrease is caused by several factors such as eating processed or junk food, using illegal and legal drugs, and excess stress. However, some researchers back in the 1930’s discovered that this acid (HCL) is not the only thing necessary to balance lymph chemistry and balance the minerals needed to alkalinize the tissue. Your body also needs a suitable NATURAL POTASSIUM ACTIVATOR.

When you combine HCL and potassium, you enable your body to create the perfect acid/base balance it needs to balance the lymph chemistry (I know I sound like a broken record, only because of how important this balance is!)

Dr Johnson brings up 3 very important points that are in your control. Exercise, Balance minerals and Potassium Activator.

Below are my personal solutions. For me they are very effective in-spite of  me making some less than stellar lifestyle choices daily.  My lymph system and immune system function well so I no longer dread the annual cold and flu season. Because I was asthmatic – I have always been very susceptible to lungs and throat bugs that would persist for extended periods. A terrible cold & flu has been affecting our local area for over 2 months.  A couple of weeks ago I woke up with it at 4:00 am.  The dreaded bug had come to visit,  but because my lymph system is now functioning well and I have solutions, within 8 hours, I was fully functional and basically without symptoms.

So what do I do different that is so effective.   I drank some fresh lemon in hot water with honey and grated ginger plus I took some Echinecea and had an Oxygen Spa. By noon. As more toxic chemicals have been introduced to our everyday environment in greater amounts over the last 20 to 30 years, the level of toxins stored in adipose tissues (fat cells) of our bodies have risen. Bioaccumulation studies have shown that some toxins store in our bodies for life. Greater and greater amounts are being stored at younger ages. One study showed that in the fat of 100% of the people tested was 1,4-Dichlorobenzene, a chemical found in most household deodorizers and room fresheners.

Diseases that used to occur later in life are now appearing at younger ages. Diseases that used to be rare are more frequent. For example:

There has been a 28% increase in childhood cancer since the addition of pesticides into household products.

Some products release contaminants into the air right away, others do so gradually over a period of time. Some stay in the air up to a year. Warning labels on containers refer only to toxic hazards from ingestion; however, only 10% of health problems from chemicals are caused by ingestion. 90% are caused by the inhalation of vapors and absorption of particles.

“Do not induce vomiting”

“Corrosive – rinse from skin immediately”

“Harmful or fatal if swallowed”

“Call physician immediately”

“Warning!” (may mean that as little as 1 teaspoon of product can harm or kill adult)

“Danger!” (means that as little as 5 drops can harm or kill an adult)

Phenol is an extremely caustic chemical that burns the skin. Absorption of phenol through the lungs or skin can cause:

central nervous system damage, pneumonia, respiratory tract infection, heart rate irregularities, skin irritation, kidney and liver damage, numbness, vomiting and can be fatal.

Phenol is a very common chemical and is regularly found in the following common products:

air fresheners, aftershave, bronchial mists, chloroseptic throat spray, deodorants, feminine powders and sprays, hair spray, decongestants, mouthwash, aspirin, solvents, acne medications, antiseptics, calamine lotions, detergents, furniture polish, lice shampoo, polishes, cold capsules, all purpose cleaners, aerosol disinfectants, anti-itching lotions, cosmetics, disinfectant cleaners, hand lotions, lip balms, sunscreen and lotions, insecticides, cough syrups … just to name a few

My absolute favorite solution that I will never be without is my Oxygen Spa. After using it, my body has had a gentle detox and massage and my home smells like after a soft summer rain.  My brain is clearer, my body relaxed, and my skin feels like a baby’s bottom.

Your body is naturally equipped with a self-cleaning process. But too much sugar, caffeine, processed foods, stress, and too little exercise can slow the body’s natural detox function to a slow pace. And then your body can’t clean itself when it is put up against the increasing number of harmful and toxic substances in the environment. Toxins come in many forms: pesticides in produce, formaldehyde in carpets and cosmetics, PCBs from plastic containers, dioxins from bleached paper products, and more.

Your body will process and eliminate some of the hordes of chemicals that enter, but overflow gets stored in the liver, lungs, kidneys, fat cells, intestines, blood stream, and skin—which can result in chronic illnesses down the road. When you undergo a detox, you get these toxins out of your system.

How do you know if you need a detox?

You know you’re suffering from toxic overload if you are experiencing fatigue, memory decline, difficulty focusing, allergies and infections, irritability, anxiety and depression, difficulty with weight gain and weight loss, muscle and joint pain or weakness, skin rashes and outbreaks, recurrent yeast and fungal infections, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal bloating, and indigestion.

Most people report vast improvement in their symptoms after a detox. At first, you may feel a little fuzzy because of the toxins being released. However, when you stick with it, you will begin to feel more alert, energized, and full of vitality.

At-Home Detox

Start small! Begin with a one-day program and gradually increase to one week or more. Here are 5 steps to a daily detox that will gently cleanse your body:

1. Start the Detox Day Right
• First thing in the morning, drink one lemon squeezed in 12 ounces of warm filtered water. Lemon activates your liver to release toxins and helps to cleanse and move the roughage that stays behind in your intestines.

• Take acidophilus or a probiotic supplement. Acidophilus is one of the many “good” bacteria and yeasts known as the probiotics. Probiotics balance our intestinal functions, helping to break down food and control the “bad” bacteria that is also in your system—all of which optimizes the detoxification process. Always take probiotics on an empty stomach.

2. Your Detox Meals
These meals are designed to jump-start your body into becoming healthier.
• Breakfast: Eat oat bran cereal, brown rice, or any other whole grain cereal as long as it is unbleached and does not contain any added sugar or chemicals.

• Lunch or Dinner: Eat any combination of beans, brown rice, oat bran, vegetables, and organic chicken, or turkey. When you eat, notice how your food affects you. You should feel satisfied and energized. If you feel tired and sluggish, try eating smaller meals so that you don’t overwhelm your digestion and interfere with the detoxification process.

3. Eat Green to Spring into Health
The green pigment in plants, chlorophyll, is structurally similar to the hemoglobin in the human body—the iron-containing element in blood. It increases red blood cell production and improves oxygenation, detoxification, and circulation. Be sure to eat several servings of fresh green vegetables every day during your detox. Try this super-cleansing broth and juice as a quick way to up your veggie intake.

Detox Broth: Add as many of these ingredients as you can into a large pot of filtered water: collards, Swiss chard, kale, mustard greens, cabbage, dandelion, Brussels sprouts, daikon radish, watercress, seaweed, shitake mushrooms, cilantro, garlic, leeks, fresh fennel, anise, fresh ginger, and turmeric. Boil until all ingredients are soft. You can make in a large batch and refrigerate for up to three days.

Detox Juice: Juice the following together: Aloe vera juice (which can be found in most health food stores), apples, asparagus, beets (including greens), cabbage, carrot and carrot greens, celery, cucumbers, and parsley. You can also purchase vegetable juice from the store, but be sure that it has no added salt or chemicals.

4. Supplement Your Detox
• Take a daily supplement of 1 tablespoon of flax seed oil, walnut oil, or deep-sea fish oil.

• Green Tea is a strong antioxidant, and a great beverage choice for your detox. Be sure to drink decaffeinated green tea.

• Dandelion and Milk Thistle both protect and restore the liver. According to Chinese medicine, the liver is most active in the detoxification process during spring.

• Ginger is a bowel and kidney cleanser. Make yourself tea from fresh ginger root during your detox.

5. Take an Invigorating Herbal Soak

Spring may be the best time to cleanse your body, but you don’t have to wait until spring to start. Detoxification and cleansing is a healthy maintenance program for all seasons.

1/4 tsp of coconut oil added to the last 5 minutes of your soak is very beneficial to your skin and hair. Coconut oil taken orally also has many beneficial effects on almost every body system.

My personal thoughts on detoxification are that it should be a continuously ongoing. Toxins are accumulated on an ongoing basis so ongoing detox is just plain smart preventative maintenance.

At the very least – start your day with fresh lemon in hot water.

I like to grate fresh Ginger, let it steep while I juice a lemon, I then add the lemon to the steeped ginger tea and sweeten with a bit of honey or real maple syrup.  No matter the season,  the fresh Lemon – Ginger combo really adds zest to your morning. It also has an excellent detoxifying effect.

If you have an intestinal system that is working well, leave well enough alone. I suffered from severe IBS before it had a name. Now my intestinal system works really well. The friendly flora are in the correct balance.  I now will only add a Pro-biotic when that balance is disturbed and would not add it as part of my detox program.

Our bodies are an amazing compilation of complex systems that work synergistically. The gut is one of those complex systems.

My investigations show that coconut oil is the one most nourishing of the oils and is absorbed by the body very easily. Our body temperature is warm enough to keep the oil liquid for easy absorption.

If you already have pure virgin olive oil or sunflower oil in your home – do use that rather than delaying trying the masks until you can purchase coconut oil.

Aroma and Essential oil/Mineral salt therapy have long been used with hydrotherapy as they complement and enhance the effectiveness of each other, beyond what either could do alone.

The Oxygen Spa is my passion so my apologies for being so long-winded ( you will note if you look at my other posts this is not typical) but the change the Oxygen Spa has brought to my skin and my life is so huge I wish I could give every home one.
